The Modernisation Committee, set up to “consider reforms to House of Commons procedures, standards, and working practices,” is asking for views on what topics to prioritise for action as it develops its work programme.
The Alcohol Health Alliance UK have submitted evidence on the need for better alcohol policies in Parliament to safeguard employees, improve working practices, and drive up standards.
Our submission highlights the pervasive drinking culture in Westminster, that blurs boundaries between personal and professional life, and has been found to contribute to incidences of intimidating behaviour, bullying and harassment. This pro-alcohol environment is at odds with effective policymaking, and serves to exclude those who may not consume alcohol for cultural, religious, or health reasons.
