29th April 2015: Responding to research from Alcohol Concern suggesting that the alcohol industry is using responsible drinking messages to promote products rather than help consumers make safer drinking choices, Professor Sir Ian Gilmore, chair of the Alcohol Health Alliance UK (AHA) said:
“This report shows that industry’s responsible drinking messages are have no public health value and may indeed be encouraging drinking. Health messages and other public health interventions should be developed independent of groups with vested interests. The alcohol industry must put shareholder interests first, so that profits will always trump health considerations.
“We urgently need evidence-based health warnings on alcohol labels, including information on how alcohol can cause cancer.”
