26 June 2015: Responding to the findings of Alcohol Concern’s report that under-18s are consuming more spirits than any other type of alcohol, Professor Sir Ian Gilmore, chair of the Alcohol Health Alliance UK (AHA) said:
“Whilst young people drinking alcohol is nothing new, the switch from ciders to spirits is truly worrying. We know that of those that drink, they are drinking more and as these findings show, consuming stronger drinks. Affordability is key to consumption, making spirits less affordable will save lives; it really is as simple as that”.
In response to these findings, Alcohol Concern is calling for a 4% increase in duty for spirits. Read the report here.
