22 June 2015: Responding to the launch of Balance North East’s Alcohol and Cancer campaign, Professor Sir Ian Gilmore, chair of the Alcohol Health Alliance UK (AHA) said:
“This campaign is an important step in raising awareness of the direct link between alcohol and breast cancer. Evidence shows that the public is largely unaware that alcohol, like tobacco and asbestos, is a group 1 carcinogen. Every person has the right to know what they are taking into their bodies and to make an informed choice. It is vital that alcohol labels carry mandatory health warnings and lists of ingredients, and that these are developed independently of the alcohol industry, which will always place the interests of shareholders above the interests of public health”.
